For the OmniPayments team it’s been a very busy end to the year, 2018. If you have been following us on social media you will have seen how we took time out to celebrate the holidays up and down the western hemisphere and beyond. SIBOS Sydney 2018 kicks off Oct 21, 2018, and runs through to Oct 25, 2018. It will be held in Sydney, Australia and it will pull in a vast crowd of folks from financial institutions worldwide. Banks are incubating plans to phase out the 16-digit card numbers on credit and debit cards, reported the Times recently. A couple of things are driving this. First, the explosion in contactless and mobile banking apps, and secondly the rise in online shopping. Removing 16-digit PANs from the front of cards is transforming the look and feel of payment cards, which from the outset over 50 years ago featured an embossed number on the front. What would remain on the front is the scheme & contactless logos, and maybe the word Debit or Credit. The explosion of contactless and mobile apps such as ApplePay is leveraging the token value embedded inside the chip which represents the card number in a tokenised form. It’s still a value that the card payment systems can recognise as you, but it’s no longer a number that opens you up to Fraud Risk through skimming or copying by nefarious means. Who are the real challengers in the payments space?

So much of the UK’s traditional banking and payment infrastructure sits astride a very old and creaking rocking-horse. One that may look very nice in the corner of your living room, but chances are you’re a bit afraid it may no longer take your trim weight for more than a second or two. UK challenger banks are taking a different route, and are leveraging EU Passporting to bring you & I better banking. The names Atom, Revolt, Starling and Monzo are not necessarily high street names that you see every day, but the young and flexible millennials are adopting them in their droves. It isn’t time to count out cash any time soon …

Through the years, indeed for more than fifty years now, it is as though the clock is counting down the hours until cash fades from the scene. Society has for a very long time become well-adjusted to walking up to machines, presenting pieces of plastic, and pulling cash out of the dispensary. But the flip side has always been one of protecting cash – keeping it safe. Indeed, one of the primary roles for any bank branch office is to be home to a safe that is designed to keep watch over our cash and ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. OmniPayments and Open Banking – what’s this all about, then?

Open Banking and talk of embracing Open Banking is nothing new. It’s been the subject of many forums and conferences for bankers for quite some time. It was also the subject of conversation at a recent meeting with OmniPayments CEO Yash Kapadia while he was travelling through Australia where even the biggest of Australian banks talked about their desire to move in that direction. So, what does banking management mean by Open Banking? It’s all been about providing APIs into banking applications that are open and as such, accessible by any company that, as part of their own application or app, needs to tap the resources of one or more banks in order to complete a process. Think of all the new FinTech companies that eventually need to get back to information only saved at a bank – again, think about getting a loan from a bank and wanting to know the loan opportunities from multiple banks.
